Elite Maintenance Services Group is often called out for urgent carpet cleaning jobs. When accidents happen, we aim to respond as quickly as possible — and in most cases, the damage can be fixed.
That said, knowing what to do before professional help arrives can make a big difference. In this two-part stain series, we’re covering the most problematic household spills. Interestingly, many of the toughest stains have one thing in common: the colour red.
In this article, we’ll focus on red wine and blood stains — and what to do if they end up on your carpet.
How to Remove Red Wine Stains from Carpet
Red wine contains natural tannins, which can permanently dye carpet fibres if not treated quickly. Acting fast is critical.
What you’ll need
- White paper towels or a white cotton cloth
- Cold water
- Wool detergent (such as Softly)
- Vinegar
- A phone (just in case)
Step-by-step method
- Blot immediately
Use a white cloth or paper towel to blot up as much wine as possible. Avoid rubbing — blotting lifts liquid without spreading the stain. - Dilute the stain
Apply a small amount of cold water to the affected area to dilute what remains. Continue blotting gently. Be careful not to overwet the carpet. - Apply a mild cleaning solution
Mix one teaspoon of wool detergent and one teaspoon of vinegar into a cup of water. Dab this onto the stain and blot from the outside inwards. - Rinse and dry
Sponge lightly with cold water, then blot dry with a clean white cloth. Speed up drying by pointing a fan directly at the area. - Still visible? Call the professionals
If the stain hasn’t lifted, stop — further DIY attempts can make it worse. Professional carpet stain removal and sanitising may be required.
How to Remove Blood Stains from Carpet
Blood stains are particularly tricky because they can appear to disappear, only to re-emerge once the carpet dries.
What you’ll need
- White paper towels or a white cotton cloth
- Cool water
- Wool detergent (such as Softly)
- Vinegar
- Hydrogen peroxide (20 vol, diluted)
- A phone
Step-by-step method
- Blot first
Absorb as much of the blood as possible using a white cloth or paper towel. - Dilute with cool water
Apply a small amount of cool water to the stain and continue blotting. Never use hot water — it can set blood stains permanently. - Apply cleaning solution
Mix one teaspoon of wool detergent and one teaspoon of vinegar into a cup of cool water. Dab gently onto the stain and blot from the edges toward the centre. - Use hydrogen peroxide if needed
If the stain remains, apply a diluted solution (1 part hydrogen peroxide to 10 parts cool water). Leave for 10 minutes, then blot dry. - Rinse and dry
Lightly sponge with cool water and blot dry. Use a fan to assist drying. - If it returns, stop and call Elite
Persistent blood stains usually require professional treatment using specialised techniques.
When DIY Isn’t Enough
Some stains penetrate deep into carpet fibres and underlay. Over-cleaning, incorrect products or excessive moisture can cause permanent damage or make stains worse.
Elite Maintenance Services Group uses professional systems aligned with recognised IICRC standards to safely treat difficult stains without harming carpet fibres. We also provide complete carpet cleaning services to restore hygiene and appearance after accidents.
